Antarctic Prion

Flying over your head, one can count the individual feathers of this Black-browed Albatross. To optimize gliding on the wind, all albatrosses have more elongated wings (more secondary feathers) than other birds. |

Southern Royal Albatross
Most Southern Royal Albatrosses breed on Campbell Island, New Zealand, but their long wings, over three metres from wingtip to wingtip, carry them all across the Southern Ocean. I photographed this near-adult bird on the Drake Passage. In the years to come its wings will gradually whiten more and more. |
