Antarctic Prion
Prions are fast flying petrels, relatively small (wingspan 56cm) that are often seen in groups. They are very well camouflaged to protect them against gulls and skuas.

Royal Albatross
As white as a pearl, exposed in the bright sunshine, this huge bird zig-zags its way across the Southern Ocean.

Panorama photograph of a Black-browed Albatross
This photograph was taken with an exposure time fast enough to get the bird sharp (mind the drop of salt at the end of its beak!), yet long enough to blur the sea, stressing the speed of the bird's flight.

Black-browed Albatross, seen from below
Flying over your head, one can count the individual feathers of this Black-browed Albatross. To optimize gliding on the wind, all albatrosses have more elongated wings (more secondary feathers) than other birds.

Southern Royal Albatross
Most Southern Royal Albatrosses breed on Campbell Island, New Zealand, but their long wings, over three metres from wingtip to wingtip, carry them all across the Southern Ocean. I photographed this near-adult bird on the Drake Passage. In the years to come its wings will gradually whiten more and more.

Black-browed Albatross seen from the side
This photograph shows the characteristic broad black bands running over the bird's underwings. The red tip of the bill indicates this is an adult bird. An elegant photograph of an elegant bird.
