Gentoo penguin colony on Cuverville Island

Resting Weddell seal
An adult Weddell seal rests on the snow. A thick layer of fat under their skin ensures they are not exposed to the cold surface that they rest upon. They often hunt at night so they rest during the day.

Sea covered with ice
Not an unusual situation in Antarctic waters at all: growlers big and small float as far as the eye can see. They originate from decomposing icebergs and glaciers.

This photograph beautifully shows the details: the barnacles on the extremities of the tail and the drops of water running down the tail.

Bathing South polar skua
Skuas are very fond of bathing, often in groups. This is a nice sharp shot of such a bird cleaning itself; drops of water nearly fall off the canvas.

Edinburgh Rock (1)
This 'tower of basalt' has been formed by the quick hardening of lava stone (just like the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland), creating these interlocking basalt columns.

Edinburgh Rock (2)
This is the foot of the rock, which sticks out of the sea. Here the interlocing basalt columns were broken and weared off. Today they remain an impressive pattern created by the forces of nature.
