Southern Royal Albatross
Most Southern Royal Albatrosses breed on Campbell Island, New Zealand, but their long wings, over three metres from wingtip to wingtip, carry them all across the Southern Ocean. I photographed this near-adult bird on the Drake Passage. In the years to come its wings will gradually whiten more and more.

Panorama photograph of a Black-browed Albatross
This photograph was taken with an exposure time fast enough to get the bird sharp (mind the drop of salt at the end of its beak!), yet long enough to blur the sea, stressing the speed of the bird's flight.

Yellow-nosed Albatross sitting on the water
Albatrosses regularly land at sea to rest or to forage, alone or with other seabirds. Yellow-nosed Albatrosses feed on squid or carrion discarded by fishing vessels. To get airborn again, they need wind under their wings.
