Gentoo penguins calling
By calling out loud partners know where to find each other. Their red beaks sharply contrast with the rest of this photograph, which otherwise would have been a pure black and white picture.

Gentoo penguin chicks in their nest
The chick on the left was born a couple of days earlier, and so it has grown already much bigger than the chick on the right. Even at this early age, chicks are tought the importance of stones and tail feathers .

South polar skua in flight
Skuas are opportunistic birds when it comes to finding food. These intelligent birds are very powerful flyers.

Bathing South polar skua
Skuas are very fond of bathing, often in groups. This is a nice sharp shot of such a bird cleaning itself; drops of water nearly fall off the canvas.

The glacier of Neko Harbour seen from a bird's view. About a hundred years ago this used to be a safe harbour for whalers. Today, it is an oasis of silence and peace.

Portrait of a Leopard Seal
They are the 'bad boys' of Antarctica, infamous for predating on penguins. Yet its major food source is the same as the penguin's: krill and fish. I dedicate this portrait to this seal, which is after all simply one node in a food web.

Weddell Seal resting
A adult Weddell Seal rests on the snow. Their thick layer of fat ensures they are not bothered at all by the cold. Like all seals, they hunt mainly at night and rest during the day.

Edinburgh Rock (1)
Deze 'toren van basalt' is ontstaan door het snel smelten van de lavasteen (net als de Ierse Giant’s Causeway), waardoor een lijnenspel van zeshoekige banen ontstaan is.

Edinburgh Rock (2)
This is the foot of the rock, which sticks out of the sea. Here the interlocing basalt columns were broken and weared off. Today they remain an impressive pattern created by the forces of nature.

Not an unusual situation in Antarctic waters at all: growlers big and small float as far as the eye can see. They originate from decomposing icebergs and glaciers.
