About Life On AntarcticaMost of the year Antarctica is an inhospitable place for plants, animals and man... But as soon as the days start to lenghten life returns in all its forms and takes all opportunities while they are there. The Antarctic Peninsula is less harsh than the rest of the continent, and so this region is particularly busy during the breeding season. I'll take you to the peninsula and to the Weddell Sea and I'll explain how animals like penguins, seals and petrels (seabirds) have adapted to these extreme conditions. It soon becomes apparent that sea ice plays an important role in the Antarctic foodweb. Sure you'll be watching stunning photographs but there is a lot of factual information for you, too.

Nomads Of The OceanThe Southern Ocean is one of the stormiest oceans on the planet. At the same time it is home to the albatrosses and petrels. These fascinating birds have adapted in various ways to a life entirely at sea. Wandering Albatrosses and also Grey-headed Albatrosses circumnavigate Antarctica in a couple of months, gliding effortlessly thousands of kilometers. Sooty Shearwaters go even further as they migrate between the northern and the southern hemisphere in search for an 'endless summer' that offers a constant supply of food. The seabirds are not only favourites fishermen and sailors, but also of myself! The many hours, days, weeks photographing on board of different vessels have resulted, through the years, in an impressive collection of photographs of which I will be glad to show you the best ones. And of course I will not fail to provide detailed information on each species of seabird.

Expedition South Georgia, 1927-1928This is an extraordinary story of two men and a woman who spent no less than nine months travelling around the subantarctic island of South Georgia. Assisted by whalers they chartered the entire island. In the first part of this presentation I will provide some biographical facts on the expedition members. The leader, a German named Ludwig Kohl, was a man with broad interests that characterized his life. He married Margit, daughter of the man who had founded the whaling industry in Antarctica since 1904. Margit too participated to this expedition. The third member was Benitz. He was the expedition's camera man and captured the first-ever footage of South Georgia, at the height of the whaling industry. I will show his unique documentary (not available online or in shops) in the second half of this presentation. Since the documentary is a silent film I will comment on the black and white images. The movie shows wildlife images of penguins and elephant seals, but also of their expedition and the whaling industry.

A Summer Season In AntarcticaThe Antarctic summer ends as promptly as it started: during this short period penguins and other birds, as well as many seals and other marine mammals, cease their chance to reproduce. Algae and plants resume growth. But sea ice, snowfall and temperature can cause trouble, and some animals are better prepared to such changes than others. This presentation focusses on the many life forms that come and go, shrink and grow as the season progresses. The many photographs let you witness the changes throughout the summer season. Besides landscapes and seascapes this lectures shows beautiful pictures of flora and fauna, of course with interesting background information. How does life depend on snow, ice and on each other? The lecture covers the Southern Ocean, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Weddell Sea.
