Seabirds of the North Sea, 8 October 2006

A Skua (Stercorarius skua) attempts to attack a young gull.
On 8 October 2006 I participated to a so-called 'pelagic trip' with a group of bird enthusiasts from the area of Amsterdam. The trip was not really pelagic in the sense that we did not cross the continental shelf - but ten kilometers off the coast you are on the open sea where you will spot seabirds that are not easily observed from the mainland. I am presenting a small selection of these birds on this page.

An adult Gannet (Morus bassanus) flying by low across the waves is a pleasur for the eye.

A Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) shows its winter plumage.

A young Gannet tries to catch the fish which was attached to our boat using a small line. No fair play, I admit.

A juvenile Gannet flies alongside our boat.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) in winter plumage (grey head)
