LEXsample and the Antarctic season of 2008-2009
The coming time I'll be at work on ships sailing to the Antarctic peninsula, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and a couple of other locations. This means that I will be unable to regularly update this website. But after each trip I will upload some photographs to my Flickr account. Click the Flickr logo to jump to my photo page:

You can keep on sending feedback or place orders, I will get back to you as soon as I can. Just use the feedback page as usual.

Seabirds Landing On Ships
It regularly happens that seabirds (petrels) land on ship decks. They are attracted or disortientated by the ship's lights. In collaboration with IAATO (the organisation regulating tourism to Antarctica and subantarctic islands) and BirdLife International I have created a communication package. You can download this material for free from this new page: Seabirds landing on ships.

Country Of Painted Birds
The three volume series 'Aves del Uruguay - El País De Los Pájaros Pintados' (Birds Of Uruguay, Country Of Painted Birds) covers 450 birds species that are found in Uruguay. The three books not only describe the bird species, but also a couple of themes, such as ecotourism and nest building. A couple of LEXsample photographs of seabirds were used in volume 2 of the series.

A list of publications that used LEXsample photographs can be found on the LEXsample :: publications page.

Albatrosses feature in Dutch IUCN magazine
I wrote an article on the conservation of albatrosses and petrels for the Dutch branch of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN-NL), which has just been published in their magazine. The issue includes a special LEXsample postcard of a Light-Mantled Albatross (not commercially available).

Another postcard will be available as of December... on Antarctica. For more details, view the page LEXsample :: publications

Eva de Roovere; 'Over & Weer', Carré theatre (22 September 2008)
No, Carré theatre was far from sold-out on this Monday evening, but the audience was as enthusiastic as Belgium singer Eva de Roovere herself. For the first time with all her musicians she sang the songs from her new album titled 'Over & Weer'. Here I am presenting today thirteen new photographs of yesterday's show.

Reviewed website, new online shop
Finally! Today I am launching my renewed website. It has taken a lot of time to prepare it all, but from now on there will be time to add some new photographs. Until then I invite you to take a peep into my new online shop, which has a lot of new articles based on new photographs. One of them are the three sets of postcards based on my photographs. 20:55 2-9-2008

Dutch Bird Fair 2008: 72 euros for BirdLife
Last weekend the annual Dutch Bird Fair took place. Visitors donated money to BirdLife's Save The Albatross campaign, and money was added from sales of my new series of postcards. The total sum amounted to € 72,00. I would like to thank everybody who donated some money. The overview of the money you helped to raise me for this campaign can be found on the donations page.

If you are interested to purchase the new postcards, visit this website soon again: I will be launching the new online shop one of these days...

Albatrosses in Amsterdam street
Since last weekend pedestrians walking the Overtoom, one of Amsterdam's main streets, may spot the mini-exhibition of five albatross photographs that are hanging in the window of number 467. The five canvas prints are the photographs that can be ordered as part of the promotion albatross on canvas. There is a short information board too. If you would like to learn more, please take a look at these links:

Leaf, Erny Green & Alamo Race Track
Last month I published a couple of live pictures online at the photo website Flickr. Three dutch bands (Leaf, Erny Green & Alamo Race Track) performed live at the Amsterdam Vondelpark on 22nd July.

Nicole Atkins & The Sea (Melkweg) 7 July 2008
Nicole Atkins was back again in Amsterdam. Once again she and her band (The Sea) played songs from their latest CD 'Neptune City', as well as a couple of new songs such as the newly composed 'Milky Way', which, according to Nicole, they had never played live before and which was appropriate enough for this venue with the same name. Since not only the sound but also the light was excellent (for photography), I am publishing sixteen new photographs.

Christy Moore & Declan Sinnott - Carré Theatre, 28 May 2008
The Irish legend singer/guitarist Christy Moore gave away a performance in the Carré Theatre (Amsterdam, Netherlands), accompanied by guitarist Declan Sinnott. With Christy Moore's sometimes humoristic, sometimes critical ballads that kept the audience perfectly quiet every once in a while, it was a traditional show. Today I am publishing thirteen new photographs of yesterday's concert.

Broken Social Scene - Melkweg, Amsterdam, 13 May 2008
The Toronto band the Broken Social Scene is composed of a whole group of musicians who fill up the small stage of the Melkweg venue. Names come and go, but the constant factors are Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. The members kept on rotating their music instruments, except for the drummer. The audience was clearly enthusiastic about this ambience music style, and hopefully about this series of photographs too... The Brunettes - Melkweg, Amsterdam, 13 May 2008
The Brunettes played a short (too short if you ask me) support act for Broken Social Scene. Their setlist was unchanged compared to last month, when I photographed this New Zealand band in the other Amsterdam venue, Paradiso. And they still swing.

Tresora (April 2008)
Two weeks ago I took this serie of portraits of Tresora. It was a busy but rewarding day, as you can see for yourself on this new page which shows as much as twenty-four photographs.

Should you be interested to have your picture taken by me, then drop me an email using the feedback page.

Nicole Atkins & The Sea (Bitterzoet) 2 May 2008
Nicole Atkins (1978) and her band 'The Sea' played songs from 'Neptune City'. This is Nicole's debut CD, with very strong songs that she wrote herself. Her band, consisting of a guitarist, bass player, keyboard player and a violin player, managed to reproduce the CD's bombastic sound really well on stage, and the sound was indeed very good. You'll find here twelve new photographs of Nicole and The Sea.

Over 4000 euros for Save The Albatross
I realized we have just crossed the 4000 euros threshold for BirdLife's Save The Albatross campaign that I am supporting (with your help!) An overview of all donations can be found in the Antarctica special, under donations

Wednesday 16 April 2008

dEUS - Vantage Point (Melkweg, Amsterdam), 15 April 2008
dEUS is back. With Vantage Point, their fifth album, which will be released next month. The Melkweg was sold out as the band members played songs from their new CD, such as their single The Architect. Seventeen new photographs give an impression of this concert.

Monday 14 April 2008

Shout Out Louds & The Brunettes
The Brunettes are a New Zealand band that I photographed for the first time at the end of last year. Yesterday they were back in Amsterdam, where they played as support act for the Swedish band Shout Out Loud. Two bands with contagious tunes to dance to. These two pages are also the first one presented in a slightly new layout, which hopefully does more justice to the quality of the photographs too!

Why use a harpoon... when you can use a Canon?
As a photographer and nature guide to Antarctica, I can only support this call for action by Greenpeace to send Mr. Mitarai, COE of Canon Japan, an email to ask him to stop his government from whaling in the Southern Ocean. Traditionally, Canon has always positioned itself as being concerned about nature conservation. Mr Mitarai is therefor the right person to ask his gouvernment to stop whaling.

Review: A complete guide to Antarctic wildlife
For those who are interested: I have reviewed the new, second, edition of 'A complete guide to Antarctic wildlife' by Hadoram Shirihai with the first one. Read here what the changes are.

Cristina Branco - From A to Z
Last March 2008 the portugese singer Cristina Branco has been touring in the Netherlands with a show in which she sung old and new work. The Amsterdam concert hall 'Meervaart' is the last but one show of this tour. Of this concert I am presenting fourteen new photographs..

Friday 14 March 2008

Piter Wilkens sings Cornelis Vreeswijk
Yesterday the Frisian singer Piter Wilkens crossed the Frisian border to perform in the small Amsterdam theater The Cameleon. Backed up by Rik Meijer and Willo de Bildt he performed songs of his CD, It fûgeltsje yn myn gitaar (The Little Bird In My Guitar). Today I am adding 13 new photographs of this concert to my website.

New - LEXsample :: site map
It is not that my website is so complex, but I thought it would be a good idea to provide an easy site map which displays the structure of this website. You can also access it by clicking on the question mark at the bottom of the main menu.

Updated - Antarctica :: books
Under the header Special! Antarctica, at the link Antarctica :: books (left menu) I have added some more reviews and a couple of titles of newly published books that I have yet to review.

Beavers in Tierra del Fuego
In 1946, twenty-five pairs of Canadian Beavers were brought from Canada and introduced in Tierra del Fuego. Today there are many thousands of these rodents, and they are considered to be a plague. In an attempt to reduce their numbers they are being hunted. I hunted them with my camera one afternoon and present to you seven photographs.

Over 1500 euro for BirdLife's albatross campaign
Today I have sent the money to BirdLife/RSPB for their Save The Albatross campaign. The total sum, € 1590,30, was collected since November last year. A considerable portion of this sum was donated by guest crew on board of the Barque Europa - these people were fortunate enough to see albatrosses gliding over the ocean with their own eyes!

Refer to the page Save The Albatross :: donations, where you can view all financial details. And of course, do not forget to read some of the encouraging news and good results achieved lately by BirdLife and the RSPB on www.savethealbatross.net
