Succesful annual meeting of Sovon
The annual meeting of the Dutch organisation for the monitoring of bird species in the country, Sovon, was held today in the city of Nijmegen. Many people attended lectures and gathered information on various wildlife topics. From my side of things, I would like to thank the team of the Dutch Seabird Group who let me have half of their available space. A total of € 22,00 was donated for the Save The Albatross campaign - thank you for your contributions! The money has been added to the total sum of which you can find an overview on the donations page.

Field Work On Bird Island Hoeckelingsdam
Close to the city of Amsterdam, off the coast of the village of Durgerdam, lies a 1.6 km long island in the lake IJmeer which was artificially created to compensate the environment when Amsterdam expanded eastwards with the creation of IJburg. Ever since the island was created a surprising number of bird have indeed used the site to breed, including plovers, avocets and various species of gull. A number of volunteers were landed on the island to clear the site of small trees which attempt to grow there. Keeping the space open is import if we want these ground-breeding birds to come back next spring. I took a couple of photographs to show the faces of these hard workers.

Martin Melchers and Merel Westrik introduce their new movie Good-bye to Amsterdam City Ecologist Martin Melchers
After seventeen years Martin Melchers retires. Within the city of Amsterdam Martin is well-known for his enthusiasm for urban nature. His farewell was celebrated in the former church The Dove, with a symposium on Urban Ecology. But Martin had a present too for all the visitors who had shown up in great numbers: the first showing of his new documentary titled Haring In Het IJ ('herring in the river IJ'), produced in collaboration with Merel Westerik, well-known for her work for local TV channel AT5. But before the film was shown, the city maire, mr Job Cohen presented Martin Melchers a royal order for all his work to the City of Amsterdam.

I took a series of photographs which I've published on Flickr: www.Flickr.com.

At last!
At last there is some news from LEXsample. Things have not been really quiet at all on the background. I have been considering to publish this website using an alternative system. Whilst weighting the cons and pros I did not update the current website. I am still considering a switch to a more advanced system, but until that happens I will continue to update this website as it is. And so please find two new items down below - more to follow!

New poster for 'stranded seabirds'
The mini-poster which I developped last year in collaboration with people from BirdLife and IAATO has been updated: IAATO (the organisation that regulates Antarctic tourism) have produced a new version of this poster. Printed (and laminated) copies were distributed amongst their members. The PDF version of this new poster can now also be downloaded from my own website if you go to the page Seabirds Landing On Ships.

Guide for Ushuaia
Having visited Ushuaia a couple of times in the last few years, I decided to pencil down my personal impressions, tips and ideas and publish it under the header of the 'Special Antarctica' on this website. If you are lucky to travel to Antarctica: Ushuaia and its surroundings are worth to spend a couple of days extra. Read here the Guide for Ushuaia.

Good Season For The Albatross
Last week I returned from my last Antarctica trip, aboard the Europa we arrived in Capetown, South Africa from where I flew back to Amsterdam. There are a lot of things to be picked up, but I could not wait to count the donations that were made for the Save The Albatross campaign aboard the cruise ships I worked on. The total sum amounts to nearly € 2300,00. That is good news indeed! Thanks to all of you who donated so generously, and to the other guides Hans, Marleen, Bart, Jorien and Jolande for their help.

Details of the donations made for the albatross conservation can be viewed here.

418 Photographs On Flickr
It will take a while before I have sorted out the photographs I took during the trips I made, and I intend to publish the best ones on my website. But until then, please check out the 418 photographs from these trips that I have published on my Flickr account.

More LEXsample photographs on Flickr
I am still travelling, at the moment preparing a new trip to the Antarctic peninsula. The last days I camped in the national park of Tierra del Fuego, 10 km from Ushuaia (Argentina). This has resulted in a few nice pictures of Magellanic Woodpeckers and other birds. I have upgraded my Flickr account to 'pro' which allows me to publish more photographs than before. While travelling it is easier for me to upload to Flickr than to update my own website. So if you are curious to see the 250 photographs (viewed 497 times as of today) then click on this Flickr icon:
