Introduction

For most people, a trip to Antarctica is actually a trip to the Antarctic peninsula - the continent's arm which extends northwards and where the climate is much milder, allowing much greener summmers than in the barely accessible white continent's inner land.

The summer period roughly runs from November until March. The relatively higher temperatures on the peninsula, still an immensely vast area, enable many animal species to live there in great numbers for a short summer season. It is the colourful part of Antarctica: the yellow-orange and green lichens, purple kelp, red stone, small green plants, and violette sunsets.

Most visitors will want to save their impressions on photo or video. This article is aimed at the photographers amongst them who wish to prepare themselves for their trip to try to make better pictures. It is based on my own experiences while travelling and taking photographs in the region.

Much more important than photography is prevention of disturbance to the wildlife and vegetation. Make sure you read the guidelines for landings on Antarctica which can help to minimize the impact of tourism.

Since most expeditions to Antarctica will be made by boat, I have focussed on life aboard of a ship. There is certainly a lot to see while out on sea! For many people the name Drake Passage invokes thoughts on sea sickness, but during the summer period this ocean can be very calm too and offers great chances to spot dolphins, cetaceans and seabirds. This is why I have covered photography on board of a vessel on these pages, too.

Many of the tips presented are valid for any camera. Other tips are only for more professional (and more expensive) cameras that offer more possibilities. But whether you will be using a cheap point-and-shoot camera or a pro one, film or digital, with fixed or with zoom lens: ultimately it is about the pleasure of taking photographs, and the final result of course. These pages offer no guarantee that you will be taking perfect pictures, but they may help a bit.
