Two new postcards for the family... |
Monday 6 December 2010Photographed & designed: two postcardsRelatives are bad customers, but things aren't always about money and so lately I found myself taking photographs for one postcard, while using old scanned family pictures for the other. Design was done accordingly to the personal specifications and both designs were printed in low volumes. The result turned out to be very good, and many of the recipients phoned up to express their satisfaction. Thanks! LEXsample has solid experience with designing and printing postcards. If you need any help, just send me and email through the contact page.

Dutch/Frisian singer Nynke Laverman recorded a song for the Toon Hermans Huis Fryslân, a foundation for cancer patients and their relatives. |
Sunday 5 September 2010LEXsample photograph on cover new CD single by Nynke LavermanThe Toon Hermanshuis Fryslân (THHF) is a meeting place for people who suffer from cancer. Housed in the former prison in the city of Leeuwarden, capital of Friesland, the foundation offers multiple activities that are mainly supported by volonteers. The THHF foundation celebrated its first birthday and took the opportunity to launch a new publicity campaign to get better known. The name of this campaign translates into 'Show Your Story' and has its own website where you can listen to a fragment of the song, sung in Frisian, titeled As De Leafde Net Bestie ('If Love Would Not Exist'), a song written by the famous Dutch entertainer Toon Hermans (after whom the foundation was named) and recorded and translated by Nynke Laverman. She has taken up the role of ambassador of the foundation. For the front cover she selected a photograph I took during one of her concerts. Musicians who can be heard playing on the new CD single include Peter van der Zwaag, Peter Weimar, Ian van den Berk, Aidan Pendleton en Teije Hylkema. Useful links (all in Dutch):

This Manx Shearwater, which I photographed last summer in Scotland, belongs to the same family as Zino's Petrel. |
Thursday 26 Augustus 2010Forest fire kills 65% of Zino's Petrel chicksBirdlife International reports that forest fires have raged over the last couple of months on the island of Madeira, Portugal. These fires have also destroyed the breeding grounds of Europe's rarest seabird species. Before the disaster, the entire population was estimated to count between 130-160 individual birds. IUCN classificies this species as 'Endangered'. Like many other petrel species, Zino's Petrel breeds in a tunnel under the ground, where the pair raises just one chick every year 25 chicks and three adult birds have been found killed by the forest fires. Apparently only 13 chicks have survived. The fire has also affected the soil in which the birds dig their tunnel, which they use year after year. BirdLife International and BirdLife Portugal ask for financial help to save the remaining birds, and to restore their habitat. One action item is the creation of artificial nests (which has proved succesful on a nearby island). Having observed and photographed many species of seabirds, I am naturally very much concerned with their conservation. I have donated £100.00 on behalf of LEXsample for the conservation of Zino's Petrel. I hope you can miss some coins too...! Please find below a couple of useful links (all open in a new window):
